It’s easy to wonder; “why doesn’t somebody do something about that?”

Our Community is that somebody…

Keep Hawea Beautiful is a community movement, a vocal advocate for creating a cohesive, conscious vision for the future of Hawea.

This movement has evolved in response to the reality that the Hawea Community is quickly changing, in both the diversity of people and the natural environment.

Keep Hawea Beautiful encourages connection within the Community and participation in shaping how our people & outstanding natural landscape can be supported through the next fifty years.

The Hawea Community needs to direct a strategic plan to ensure our community and environments are placed before the will of developers and other commercial operators that wish to do business within our place.

This is a community embracing the change that is coming, in a way that is manageable and more sustainable than that which could come through adopting the massive perpetual urban growth models taken on by Wanaka and Queenstown.

We don’t have to do it that way, we can make the change.

"As we work to make our communities stronger and our neighborhoods more attractive, we must recognize that our actions are likely to make local real estate more desirable and thus less affordable for existing residents and businesses. That’s hard to imagine when conditions seem desperate, but that is exactly the time when we need to plan for the future. As we’re working on small projects, we should be consciously building the capacity to establish cooperatives, community lands trusts and other forms of community ownership. We must also organize for a living wage and ensure that government and developers act in the interest of the community, especially those at greatest risk for displacement."- Jim Diers
